Vicenza AND ITS ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS

The city of Vicenza and the Palladian villas of the Veneto is a serial site including the city of Vicenza and twenty-four Palladian villas scattered in the Veneto area. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994, the site initially comprised only the city of Vicenza with its twenty-three buildings attributed to Palladio, as well as three villas extra muros. Twenty-one villas located in several provinces were later included in the 1996 site extension. Therefore, Vicenza is one of the World Heritage Sites with the majority of protected monuments: as much as 47, even if the whole town centre, modelled by Palladio’s genius, is to be considered as mankind artistic heritage.

We suggest you to visit the town centre strolling up and down along Corso Palladio, the main street, and enjoying the wonderful Renaissance palaces you will find. Don’t forget to savour the gastronomic delicacies of our region, such as ‘baccalà alla vicentina’ (dried salted cod cooked in a delicious milk and olive oil sauce) and many DOC products as: the renowned wines, the asparagus of Bassano del Grappa, the cherry of Marostica, the ‘bisi’ (peas) of Lumignano, the broccoli of Creazzo and many others.

If you have some more time, we recommend you some other places of remarkable beauty: Piazza degli Scacchi (a square with a chessboard on it, where they play a medieval game of chess with living figures, every two years) in Marostica, Bassano del Grappa and its famous Ponte degli Alpini (bridge of the Alpine troops), Romeo and Juliet’s castles on the hills of Montecchio Maggiore. We wont forget to mention Venice, Padua, the Riviera of Brenta, Verona, the Lake Garda and many other small places of the Adriatic Sea and the Small Dolomites, all reachable in less than one hour from Vicenza.

The Basilica is famous for the open gallery with a double order of Serlian arches, designed by the great architect Andrea Palladio, surrounding the medieval ‘Palazzo della Ragione’. It has been included by Unesco in the World Heritage List.
